The Solar Lense-Thirring effect: perspectives for a future measurement

Abstract

The gravitomagnetic field of the Sun, generated by its angular momentum S, induces tiny planetary orbital precessions. Recent advances in the field of ephemerides (INPOP, EPM, DE) by different teams of astronomers may lead to its measurement in a near future. The analysis of sufficiently long data records from the MESSENGER spacecraft may be of crucial importance to extract the Lense-Thirring signature from the Mercury's orbital residuals.
