High-energy emission from neutron stars

Abstract

I will review recent results on the high-energy activity of young and millisecond pulsars and of their associated pulsar wind nebulae. The accent will be on the evolutionary aspect of the observational properties of the pulsar population. Pulsars born with short rotation periods could store a significant fraction of the energy output of supernova explosion and play a potentially important role in the injection of mechanical energy into the interstellar medium through the pulsar winds and (possibly) cosmic rays. I will discuss constraints on the physical parameters and mechanisms of activity of the pulsar powered sources at different stages of their life imposed by the gamma-ray and multi-wavelength observations.
