Talk Title

Monte Carlo Simulations of Expanding GRB Jets

Abstract

The mechanism behind the prompt emission of GRBs is a longstanding mystery which is yet to be resolved. In this talk I present Monte Carlo simulations of an expanding GRB jet composed of photon-lepton plasma. Initially in equilibrium, the photons and leptons are brought out of equilibrium by energy injection which mimics energy dissipation through shocks/magnetic reconnection. The code dynamically evolves and tracks both the position and momenta of the photons and leptons (which interact via Compton Scattering) until the photons escape the jet at the photosphere. I will present results of the time evolution of the photon spectrum/lepton distribution, pulse structure and discuss other results that can be obtained from our code.
