Talk Title |
High-Energy Neutrinos In IceCube And Beyond |
Abstract |
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, located at the geographic South Pole, is designed to detect high-energy neutrinos from galactic and extragalactic sources. IceCube, the largest neutrino telescope in the world, comprises a cubic kilometer of glacial ice instrumented with 86 vertical strings, each with 60 digital optical modules (DOMs), and a square kilometer array at the surface. Each IceCube DOM consists a photomultiplier tube that detects the Cherenkov light generated in the ice by charged particles produced by neutrino interactions. In this talk, recent results from searches for high-energy neutrinos will be presented, including the first detection of a diffuse flux of high-energy neutrinos of extraterrestrial origin with energies between about 30 TeV and 2 PeV. The events with energies above 1 PeV are the highest energy neutrinos ever observed. The current status and future goals of IceCube will be discussed. |
