Universal Solutions of Modified Theories of Gravity

Abstract

Universal spacetimes possess a remarkable property that they simultaneously solve vacuum field equations of any theory of gravity with the Lagrangian constructed from the metric, the Riemann tensor and its covariant derivatives of arbitrary order. A well known example of universal spacetimes are Ricci-flat type N pp-waves, however, the class of universal solutions turns out to be much richer. We show that in arbitrary dimension, a type N spacetime is universal if and only if it is Einstein and Kundt. We will also discuss our results on type III universal spacetimes.
