Pulsar J0453+1559: A Double Neutron Star System with a Large Mass Assymmetry

Abstract

To understand the nature of supernovae and neutron star (NS) formations, as well as binary stellar evolution and their interactions, it is important to probe the distribution of NS masses. We report the result of a study of J0453+1559, a new binary pulsar discovered in the Arecibo 327 MHz Drift Pulsar Survey. PSR J0453+1559 has a spin period of 45.7 ms and the system has an eccentric 4.07 day orbit. This eccentricity allows a highly significant measurement of the rate of advance of periastron, which implied a total system mass of 2.775 solar masses. We also detect the Shapiro delay to high significance, which allows precise estimates of the individual masses: pulsar mass of 1.605 and companion mass of 1.17 solar masses, respectively. The orbital eccentricity suggests that the companion to PSR J0453+1559 is also a NS, if so it has the smallest precisely measured mass for such an object. This results shows that NSs form with a wide range of masses.
