Impact Of The Gravitational Radiation Higher Modes in Aligned Spin Searches For Binary Black Holes

Abstract

Current gravitational wave searches for compact binaries neglect the higher order harmonics of the emitted radiation. Several studies have demonstrated that this neglection has an important impact in terms of event loss and parameter bias on high mass non-spinning searches and in the context of the design version of Advanced LIGO. We extend these studies to the case of single-aligned spin searches for both the design Advanced LIGO and the upcoming early Advanced LIGO, which will come online this year and whose different sensitivity crucially enhances the effect of higher order modes. We also study the case of the initial LIGO detector in the context of a non-spinning search.
