Modeling Type Ia supernova explosions

Abstract

The main obstacle to a theoretical understanding of the mechanism of Type Ia supernovae is the progenitor problem: The systems from which these events arise have not yet been identified observationally. The lack of confirmed initial conditions leads to uncertainties in the modeling of Type Ia supernovae as thermonuclear explosions of white dwarf stars. Several possibilities for the progenitor evolution and the explosion mechanism have been suggested. I will discuss recent developments by presenting multidimensional simulations that refer to different scenarios. Radiative transfer calculations that predict observables from simulated events allow for detailed comparison with astronomical data. This way, potential progenitor systems of Type Ia supernovae and explosion mechanisms can be tested systematically.
