An Observational Key To SN Ia Progenitors: MeV All-Sky Survey

Abstract

Type Ia supernovae are known as one of the most interesting objects in astronomy, especially its progenitor systems. Recently, an observational diagnostics of SN Ia progenitors was proposed by Summa et al. (2013) that peaking time of MeV gamma-ray light curve enable us to distinguish single degenerate (SD) and double degenerate (DD) scenarios. We are developing an era-opening MeV gamma-ray telescope, Electron-Tracking Compton Camera (ETCC), which is the first MeV telescope provides a point spread function (PSF) within a few degrees and efficient background rejection. In particular, such a well-defined PSF without assuming the use of iterative imaging optimization gives us a reliable sensitivity. Based on this technique, we have revealed four modules of 50 cm-cubic ETCCs loaded on a satellite, with total effective area of several hundred cm2 at 1 MeV, would reach to 1mCrab sensitivity in MeV band. In this talk, we report the sensitivity of a future ETCC system, it enables us to observe light curve of SN Ia exploding at a distance of ~60 Mpc, and we show a vision of solving the SN Ia progenitors by simulation of an MeV all-sky survey.
