Talk Title

Analogue Black Holes in Quantum Fluids of Light

Abstract

In this talk I will review the state of the art in the theoretical and experimental studies of analogue black holes in flowing superfluids of light. In suitable optically nonlinear devices, photons experience sizable binary interactions which give rise to collective behavior as a fluid. Flow configurations showing a black hole horizon have been recently created using polaritons in semiconductor microcavity platforms and a strong effort is presently being devoted to the conceptually different class of propagating photons in bulk media. After presenting the main results of experiments on polaritons and photons in which I have been involved, I will discuss the perspectives towards the observation of Hawking radiation, with a special emphasis on experimental strategies to assess the quantum origin of the radiation.
