What Is Dimensional Reduction Really Telling Us?

Abstract

We first review the evidence for dimensional reduction across a multitude of different approaches to quantum gravity. By examining the implications of dimensional reduction on Lorentz invariance and superluminal motion we argue that dimensional reduction should not be viewed as a real physical phenomenon, but rather as a hint at deeper underlying Planck scale physics. As a specific example we study dimensional reduction and superluminal motion in CDT quantum gravity and show that in order to preserve a scale invariant speed of light on all distance scales we must admit a modification to the nature of time. Experimental constraints placed on Lorentz invariance and dimensional reduction by cosmological observations are discussed throughout.
