The Blazar Zone

Abstract

The location of the main emitting region responsible for the bulk of the Blazar emission is still a puzzling issue in our understanding of jetted Active Galactic Nuclei. Fast flares and a high Compton dominance are more easily explained if the zone is closer to the Black hole, well inside the Broad Line Region, while the absence of gamma-gamma absorption features in the Fermi-LAT spectra as well as the detection at >100 GeV of some Broad-lined FSRQ objects seem to locate the Blazar zone at much larger distances along the jet, beyond the Broad Line Region. This has a direct impact on the available emission mechanisms for modeling the Spectral Energy Distribution, on the explanation of its differences, and on the meaning of the distinction between BLLac and FSRQ objects.
