Title

Constraining the neutron star equation of state with gravitational wave signals
Coauthors The LIGO Scientific Collaboration and The Virgo Collaboration

Abstract

The first detection of a gravitational-wave signal from a binary neutron star coalescence (GW170817), by the LIGO and Virgo observatories, signifies the beginning of a new era in astrophysics. By analysing gravitational wave signals from neutron star mergers, using adequate modelling of matter effects, we can probe the macroscopic properties of neutron stars and constrain the currently widely uncertain equation of state (EoS) of neutron-star matter. Early analysis of GW170817 performed measurements on the tidal parameters of the two neutron stars and already excluded a range of stiff EoS models; it also inspired further studies towards constraining the two neutron star radii. In a more recent analysis, we improve upon the initial measurements of matter effects and, assuming that both bodies are neutron stars obeying the same EoS, we translate our results to constraints on neutron-star radii and on the pressure-density function that defines the barotropic (cold) EoS at supranuclear densities.
