Title

Apertif and Techniques for Fast FRB Surveys
Coauthors

Abstract

The APERture Tile In Focus (Apertif) receiver system increases by a factor of 30 the field of view on the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). With ALERT, we will take advantage of Apertif’s 9,deg$^2$ sky coverage to search for fast radio bursts (FRBs), with an expected rate of several detections per week. We will also have the ability to trigger LOFAR at 150 MHz, where FRBs will arrive roughly a minute later, and with which they can be localized to arcsecond precision. In this talk I will give an update on our Apertif FRB survey. I will discuss the issue of false positives in the era of 24/7 surveys with thousands of beams like Apertif, including my solution to apply Deep Learning to FRB candidate sifting. Finally, I will discuss repetition from FRBs and offer strategies for discovering new repeating sources.
