Title

Absorption of electromagnetic waves by Kerr black holes
Coauthors Leite, Luiz C. S.; Dolan, Samuel R.; Crispino, Luis C. B.

Abstract

We study the absorption of plane electromagnetic waves by Kerr black holes. We calculate the absorption cross section: the area of the black hole shadow at a finite wavelength. We present a unified picture of the absorption of all massless bosonic fields, focussing on the on-axis incidence case. We investigate the spin-helicity effect, arising from a coupling between dragging of frames and the helicity of a polarized wave.

Title

May 29, 1919, Total Solar Eclipse: British, American and Brazilian Expeditions
Coauthors Crispino, Luis C. B.

Abstract

I report on the three expeditions organized to observe, in the Brazilian State of Ceará, the total solar eclipse in May 29, 1919. Apart from the well-known British expedition, which aimed to perform measurements of the bending of stellar light rays passing near the Sun, resulting in the confirmation of Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, there were two other expeditions in that occasion. One has been a Brazilian expedition, organized by the National Observatory, with the aim of studying the solar corona. The other has been a North-American expedition, organized by the Carnegie Institution, aiming to perform measurements related to terrestrial magnetism and atmospheric electricity.
