Title

Ambiguity-Free Completion of the Conservative Dynamics of Binary Systems of Compact Objects at the Fourth Post-Newtonian Order
Coauthors

Abstract

Post-Newtonian waveforms of binary systems of compact objects are key inputs for building gravitational-wave templates appropriate to analyse detector data. The construction of unbiased models aimed at optimising parameter estimation requires the knowledge of the waveform, and thus, of the equations of motion, with very high accuracy. In this talk, we shall summarise our recent derivation of the Fokker Lagrangian of two non-spinning point-like objects at the fourth post-Newtonian order of general relativity in harmonic coordinates. All divergences - those coming from the field self-interactions at the body locations as well as those appearing at infinity, where the validity of the post-Newtonian expansion breaks down - are cured unambiguously by means of dimensional regularisation. We pay particular attention to the near-zone counterpart of the leading order wave-tail effect, which generates time non-locality. The Noetherian quantities are constructed directly from the resulting non-local-in-time Lagrangian.
