Title

The C-Band All-Sky Survey (C-BASS)

Abstract

The B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background contains important information about the early universe. However, primordial B-modes, generated by gravitational waves generated during inflation, are expected to be of very small amplitude, and will be fainter than Galactic foregrounds over the whole sky and at all frequencies. To detect the primordial B-modes, observations are needed over a wide range of frequencies in order to spectrally distinguish the CMB and the foregrounds. C-BASS is a project to observe the whole sky in intensity and polarization at 5 GHz, at the lower end of the relevant frequency range. We will describe the survey instrumentation and methods, and present initial results from the northern half of the survey. We will also show the expected improvements in sensitivity to the CMB expected from C-BASS and other upcoming experiments.
