Title

Robust detection of GWs by spectrogram image filtering
Coauthors

Abstract

The most sensitive way to detect a tiny signal embedded in noise is by using the matched filter. In the case of the GW signals, this is not always possible because the waveform is not completely known and, if it is known depending on some parameters, the number of “templates” (i.e. the number of grid points in the parameters space) is very high and so enormous computing power is needed. In this paper we present methods based on 2-D filtering of the spectrogram (a time-frequency image) of the GW antennas data that are not dependent on the precise knowledge of the signal. These methods are applied to different type of signals (chirp, irregular and continuous waves). In the case of periodic waves, the parameters of the source can be estimated.
