Production of Non-thermal Particles at Relativistic Reconnection and its Radiative Signatures in Astrophysical Jets

Abstract

Relativistic magnetic reconnection is a fundamental dissipation mechanism in highly magnetized plasmas. It has also been established as an efficient mechanism of non-thermal particle acceleration. In recent years, increasingly sopthisticated kinetic simulations of relativistically magnetized plasmas provided us with detailed information on many specific aspects of relativistic reconnection, such as reconnection rates, energy and angular distributions of particles, formation of plasmoid chains, etc. In addition, particle-in-cell simulations including radiative cooling allow us to directly calculate the radiative signatures of particle acceleration in reconnection sites. Relativistic reconnection is applicable to several types of astrophysical environments, including relativistic jets in AGNs, microquasars, GRBs, pulsar winds and magnetars.
