Universal decoherence due to gravitational time dilation

Abstract

General relativistic effects are usually considered to be irrelevant for quantum phenomena. This talk will show how the effects of relativistic time dilation lead to an effective decoherence mechanism — suppressing coherence of quantum superpositions of the centre of mass for composite system in generic internal states. Even though time dilation in typical scenarios on Earth is small, the resulting decoherence becomes significant already for gram-scale systems, or highly complex molecules.
