Talk Title

Towards vapor-cell clocks on small satellites

Abstract

Optical quantum technologies have the potential to advance many applications in space, such as navigation, time and frequency distribution, Earth observation, precision ranging, communication and networks, as well as fundamental physics. Small satellites have recently gained more and more attention in and outside the space community. Reduction in cost, increase in performance and the possibility to realize short mission development times make this satellite class predestined for demonstrating fundamental science and enabling technologies in space. In this talk, we present microintegrated optical technologies developed for space and their application in optical frequency references (Rb, K, I2) and atom interferometry onboard sounding rockets. We will further give an outlook on mission scenarios to test Rb two-photon clocks using small satellites in LEO. Such a device could in future be part of precision instruments or as next-generation clock for GNSS core equipment.
