Inequivalence Between Gravitational Mass And Energy Due To Quantum Effects In Semiclassical Gravity

Abstract

We consider the so-called semiclassical variant of the Einstein’s field equation for the simplest composite quantum body – a hydrogen atom. We derive active gravitational mass operator for the atom and determine a gravitational field, created by a coherent macroscopic ensemble of such atoms at large distances. It is shown that, for stationary quantum states, the expectation values of the active gravitational mass operator and energy are equivalent. On the other hand, for superpositions of stationary quantum states, the gravitational field is shown to oscillate with time even for macroscopic coherent ensembles with the constant expectation values of energy. This fact breaks the equivalence between active gravitational mass and energy at a macroscopic level, which cannot be saved by averaging over time the above mentioned time-dependent oscillations. Possible experimental ways to discover this novel quantum gravitational phenomenon are discussed.
