Searching for galactic axions through magnetized media: The QUAX proposal

Abstract

Light stable axions, originally proposed to solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), emerge now as leading candidates of non-WIMP dark matter. The axion-electron coupling, explicitly predicted by some models, can be exploited to envisage novel detectors complementary to the ADMX haloscope. In this talk we discuss the ongoing experimental activity on such detectors at the National Laboratories of Legnaro (Italy). In particular, in the QUAX experiment we propose to measure the magnetization changes induced by axion interactions with electrons in a ferrimagnetic sample. The experimental parameters required to achieve cosmologically relevant sensitivity in this approach will be discussed.
