Searching for Dark Matter and Exotic Physics with Networks of Atomic Clocks

Abstract

Dark matter (DM) constitutes 85% of all matter in the Universe, yet conclusive evidence for DM in terrestrial experiments remains elusive. DM may consist of massive boson fields that produce effective space-time variations in the fundamental constants. Such variations lead to shifts in atomic energy levels and therefore transition frequencies. These effects can be sought by monitoring frequency comparisons between networks of atomic clocks. DM models that predict transient or oscillating variations of fundamental constants require the development of new strategies for clock comparisons, measurements, and data analyses. Initial analysis has already placed constraints on certain models that are many orders of magnitude more stringent than previous existing limits (1,2), and new techniques offer further improvements for a wider range of models (3). 1.
