de Sitter geodesics in various charts

Abstract

The geodesics on the (1+3)-dimensional de Sitter spacetime are considered studying how their parameters are determined by the conserved quantities instead of the initial conditions. The geodesic trajectories are written in the conformal Euclidean, Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker, de Sitter-Painleve, static local charts with Cartesian space coordinates and some other charts of actual interest, including the stereographyc one. The geodesic properties are investigated pointing out some difficulties arising when the coordonatization gives rise to artificial singularities of the geodesic equations which do not have a geometric or physical motivation.
