Kilonova Detection And Follow-up In Binary Neutron Star Merger GW170817

Abstract

The first binary neutron star merger detected by the gravitational interferometers LIGO and Virgo occurred in the nearby galaxy NGC4993 (40 Mpc). The relative proximity allowed clear detection and accurate monitoring at optical and infrared wavelengths of the radioactive source accompanying the neutron star merger. This brilliantly confirmed a long-standing theoretical prediction and opened an observational window into exploration of heavy nuclei synthesis in the Universe.
