Strong-field gravitational lensing on Kerr spacetime

Abstract

We study strong-field gravitational lensing by a Kerr black hole beyond leading order in the geometrical optics expansion. We calculate higher-order corrections to the stress-energy tensor, by evolving a system of transport equations along rays. At sub-leading order, the stress-energy tensor possesses a term proportional to the inverse frequency, whose sign depends on the handedness of the wave. We discuss the gain in energy of a circularly polarised beam passing close to the black hole, whose polarisation has the same handedness as the spin of the black hole.
