Static spherically symmetric black holes in quadratic gravity

Abstract

Recently, non-Schwarzschild static spherically symmetric black holes in quadratic gravity have been discovered in [Lu H, Perkins, Pope, Stelle, Phys. Rev. Lett.2015] using numerical methods. Employing our recent result that all static spherically symmetric spacetimes are conformal to a Kundt spacetime and the fact that all higher-order terms in the field equations combine into a conformally well-behaved Bach tensor, we arrive at a considerably simpler form of the field equations. This allows us to construct an explicit solution in terms of power series, which is completely characterized by the size of the black hole and the value of the Bach tensor on the horizon. Then, we discuss various physical properties of the black hole such as specific tidal effects on test particles caused by the presence of the Bach tensor.
