High Precision Foreground Modelling Using Current And Future Multi-frequency Microwave Maps

Abstract

The moment expansion machinery offers a systematic way of extending the parametrization for describing different foreground components. These extensions will play an important role in current pursuits of primordial B-mode searches and future pursuits for spectral distortions, as they enable higher precision modeling of foregrounds and subsequently their subtraction. Using this method we propose a simple prescription for assessing the number of frequency channels required to reach a certain desired accuracy in foreground modeling. We present a practical demonstration by applying this machinery on simulated multi-frequency maps. Finally we present first results from analysis on Planck HFI maps to search for these parametric extensions in measured data.
