Dynamic Monte Carlo Simulations of GRB Fireballs: Radiative Acceleration and Photospheric Emission

Abstract

We present a novel Dynamic Monte Carlo code (DynaMo) that can self-consistently simulate the scattering-driven expansion and acceleration of a plasma and its photospheric emission. We use this code to investigate the dynamic evolution and emission of GRB fireballs, exploring how microscopic interactions (Compton scattering) influence the macroscopic evolution (acceleration, expansion). DynaMo enables us to study self-consistently the evolution of the fireball opacity and energy density throughout its entire phase space. In particular, we can explore the radiation dominated, optically thin regimes with unprecedented detail. The results reveal new phases of fireball evolution: 1) transition phase, 2) post-photospheric acceleration phase, and 3) Thomson dominated acceleration phase. I will discuss these acceleration phases and their emission / lightcurves.
