The Continuous Gravitational-Wave Search in the advanced LIGO-Virgo detector era

Abstract

Thanks to an increase in the sensitivity of the LIGO-Virgo interferometers, the first transient GW signals have been already detected, allowing us to explore the cosmos in a new and deeper way, as well as to sharpen the knowledge of some of the most intriguing objects in our Universe. A better understanding will be however provided by the detection of continuous-wave (CW) signals, which are emitted by quickly rotating NSs, either isolated or in binary systems, which are characterized by a time-varying quadrupole deformation due to an asymmetry in their mass distribution. Although to date no direct CW detection can be claimed yet, we were able to derive remarkable upper limits on the CW signal strength and to reach outstanding results, which will be here illustrated together with some future prospects.
