Global Coordination of Third-generation Ground-based Gravitational-wave Detectors

Abstract

The observation and interpretation of gravitational-wave signals from Virgo and LIGO has shown just how valuable this new information messenger can be, especially when combined with electromagnetic signals and particle observations. There are compelling arguments to increase the reach and sensitivity of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors, and enormous progress has been made in determining how such more sensitive detectors could be made. Both to optimize the science return and the return on investment, a global approach to the challenge of realizing the next generation network is needed. The Gravitational Wave International Committee (GWIC) subcommittee on Third Generation Ground-based Detectors is charged with examining the path to the development of a network of future ground-based gravitational-wave (GW) observatories, by working with the global community to explore and develop 1) The science case for the next generation of observatories which drive the designs of future detectors, 2) Coordination of key research and development themes and programs that will lead to technological breakthroughs needed to achieve design goals, and 3) Recommendations for frameworks to efficiently manage and operate the next generation GW network. This talk will give an overview of the status and plans of this coordination effort.
