Bending Energies for Biomembranes via Newton-Cartan Methods

Abstract

The deformations of a lipid membrane, formed by the spontaneous aggregation of amphiphilic molecules into a fluid bilayer, are accurately captured by its geometric degrees of freedom. Equilibrium configurations of lipid membranes are solutions to the Young-Laplace equation resulting from the Helfrich bending energy - a functional quadratic in the extrinsic curvature of the membrane. Adapting methods from relativistic descriptions of deformations of black holes to the non-relativistic context using Newton-Cartan geometry and field theory allows to construct new Helfrich-type bending energies that take into account the thermal degrees of freedom of the membrane and the possibility of stationary flows of the membrane fluid. These new functionals have phenomenological consequences for the actual shape of biomembranes.
