Symmetries of the vacuum state in general boundary quantum field theory

Abstract

We derive the structure of the vacuum state for a scalar field in a general class of curved spaces using the Schrödinger-Feynman quantization based on the general boundary formulation of quantum theory. We show a symmetry of the vacuum state derived form an invariance of the action evaluated for the solution of the e.o.m satisfying boundary conditions. We show that this symmetry explains the existence of the so called alpha vacua in de Sitter space.
