Accretion Curtains On To A Neutron Star

Abstract

Neutron star has strong magnetic field, therefore matter accretes in the form of curtains near the star surface. Because of its high gravitational field, matter reaches very high velocity during the accretion process. When matter hits the hard surface with such a high speed then it forms a shock near the neutron star surface and a lot of radiation is emitted due to the cooling processes. We study this accretion process in detail using relativistic equation of state having the variable adiabatic index. We have also included cooling processes such as bremsstrahlung and cyclotron emission. We have found that for certain range of input parameters (e.g. flow energy, rotation period of star), there is a possibility of formation of two shocks, one near the surface which is primary shock and other far from the star (secondary shock). We have also studied how the shock parameters (e.g. shock location, strength, compression-ratio and shock-luminosity) are changed with input flow parameters (e.g. energy, rotation period of star).
