Modified Gravitational Waves Across Galaxies From Macroscopic Gravity

Abstract

We analyze the behavior of Gravitational Waves moving in a medium containing bounded sub-systems (”molecules”), able to induce significant Macroscopic gravity effects. We establish a precise relation between the average quadrupole, induced in the medium by the vacuum Gravitational waves, and their amplitudes, via the geodesic deviation equation. Then we determine the modified wave equation and the associated dispersion relation, showing that the velocity of the wave decreases in the medium. A further phenomenological analysis shows that anomalous polarizations of the waves emerge, inducing longitudinal stresses in contrast to the vacuum case.
