Efficient Techniques to Probe Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background Anisotropy with Ground-based Detectors

Abstract

Detection of a stochastic background will be a major achievement in gravitational wave (GW) astronomy. While the detection of the primordial background generated by processes in the early universe may be the holy grail of Observational Cosmology, the background created by a large number of distant unresolved and unmodelled astrophysical sources are the likely to be detected by the ground-based detectors in the near future. Precise measurement of this ``foreground" is not only important for extracting Astrophysics unaccessible through electromagnetic windows, but it will be crucial for confidently identifying the primordial background component which is of much smaller amplitude. The astrophysical background created by the nearby universe is likely to be anisotropic. We have developed efficient techniques based on data folding to efficiently search for anisotropic stochastic backgrounds using the standard GW radiometer algorithm, which will be summarised in this presentation.
